Why do we crumble when ahead? Strategies for cosing out matches

Hi there,

This is the worst feeling. You're playing great, up a set and maybe a break. Then, the nerves creep in. Your game tightens up. Shots that were working suddenly miss. Before you know it, the momentum has completely flipped, and the match slips away.

Why does this happen when we're so close? How do you lock in and finish the job?

  • The Mental Shift: What goes through your mind when you realize you're close to winning? How do you combat those "don't lose" thoughts?
  • Tactical Discipline: Do you change your strategy to protect the lead? Should you?
  • Practical Routines: Do you have a specific between-point routine or self-talk to stay focused?
  • Learning from Loss: What's the biggest lesson you've learned from a match you let slip?

Share your hard-earned wisdom on closing out matches with confidence.

You have to accept your opponent will raise their level. They have nothing to lose. Expect it. Don't panic when they hit a great shot. Just reset and make them do it again. The pressure is still on them.

My coach said one thing. Play the point, not the score. At 5–2, I only focus on one point. Next point comes later.
