Good focus but poor execution

This is one of the most frustrating feelings in tennis. You feel mentally locked in. Your strategy is clear. But when you go to execute, your shots betray you. The forehand flies long, the volley finds the net. Your body just isn't doing what your brain is telling it to do.

It feels like a disconnect between focus and form.

Has this happened to you? What's really going on in these moments?

  • Is it a technical breakdown under pressure, even if you don't feel pressured?
  • Could physical tension be creeping in without you realizing it?
  • Does your pre-match warm-up adequately prepare you for match speed?
  • How do you reset during a match when nothing seems to be working technically?

Let's diagnose this common struggle and share solutions to get your mind and body back in sync.

This often points to a lack of specificity in your focus. Being "mentally ready" is too vague. Your focus should be on a single, simple cue like "watch the ball onto the strings" or "full shoulder turn." This directs your body's execution more effectively than general readiness.

Hi,

Check your tension. Good mental focus can sometimes create physical tightness, especially in your shoulders and grip. Consciously shake out your arms, take a deep breath, and exhale as you hit. A relaxed body executes smoother strokes.
