Pegula's Masterclass: Consistency over power as defending champion Keys falls

Hello everyone Smile

In a high-stakes all-American clash, Jessica Pegula (6) delivered a tactical masterclass to dethrone the defending champion, Madison Keys (9), 6-3, 6-4.

The contrast in styles was crystal clear: Pegula’s relentless consistency versus Keys’ raw power. Keys pulled the trigger often, but Pegula’s discipline, depth, and smart patterns quietly took control of the match.

  • The numbers say everything: Pegula finished with just 13 unforced errors. Keys had 28.
  • Pegula hit 1 double fault. Keys had 6.
  • Pegula didn’t try to hit harder — she made Keys hit one more ball over and over.

There was even a friendly bet between them. Pegula joked that Keys now owes her something involving melted cheese and apples, while she avoids having to wear a Travis Kelce / Taylor Swift t-shirt.

Pegula now moves on to face the winner of Anisimova vs Wang, joining Gauff and another American in a very strong U.S. quarterfinal presence.

Was this more about Keys being off her game, or Pegula executing a near-perfect plan? And with this level, can Pegula realistically push to her first Grand Slam final?
