Which rivalry could steal the spotlight at the Australian Open?

With the Australian Open 2026 getting closer, I’m starting to feel that we’re entering a really interesting phase in terms of rivalries. Some match-ups already have history, others feel like they’re just about to explode.

On the ATP side, Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz still feels like the rivalry everyone circles on the calendar. Different styles, different personalities, but the same ability to raise their level against each other. Melbourne’s hard courts could really amplify that contrast: Sinner’s clean ball-striking versus Alcaraz’s creativity and athleticism.

On the WTA side, Aryna Sabalenka vs Iga Swiatek keeps getting more compelling. Power versus consistency, aggression versus control. When they meet on hard courts, it often comes down to who can impose their game first and for longer stretches.

And then there’s the question of the new disruptors. A few younger players are starting to push into big matches without fear, and sometimes those fresh match-ups are the most exciting because there’s no baggage yet.

Which rivalry do you think could define this Australian Open?

A confirmed blockbuster, or a surprise duel we don’t fully see coming yet?

I’d also keep an eye on a potential Sinner vs Medvedev rematch if the draw allows it. That matchup is very tactical on hard courts.
