Hi friends!
Here’s a tactical group drill designed to work on cross-court diagonal consistency while developing your ability to surprise your opponent with a well-placed change of direction. A great exercise to improve your game reading and decision-making.
The goal is to master consistency in cross-court exchanges while learning to trigger, at the right moment, a precise and unexpected down-the-line shot to destabilize the opponent.
Drill execution:
Players A and D position themselves at the baseline in one diagonal (e.g., forehand diagonal), and players B and C in the other diagonal.
- A and D start a controlled cross-court rally in their diagonal.
- At any moment, A or D can trigger a surprise down-the-line change of direction.
- As soon as the down-the-line is played, B and C take over in their diagonal.
- B and C repeat the same pattern (cross-court rally + surprise down-the-line), focusing specifically on the backhand.
We switch sides every 15 minutes of play so all players can work on both forehand and backhand.
This cross-court/down-the-line alternation lets you control the rally tempo, wear down the opponent in the diagonal, and capitalize on their imbalance to win decisive points.

Quick tip: For a successful down-the-line change, wait until your opponent leaves the center of the court after their shot—that’s the ideal moment!
