Hi friends!

Here’s a solo drill ideal for working on the aggressive return on a second serve—an essential skill to take the initiative from the very start of the point.

The goal is to develop the ability to step into the ball and hit a controlled, attacking return on second serves, while improving trajectory reading.

Drill execution:

Place the ball machine in the service box and set it to send soft, slightly topspun balls, alternating to the forehand side and the backhand side. The aim is to practice taking the initiative on both sides.

Position yourself as the returner, slightly inside the baseline. On each feed, recover your position, then step forward at contact and look for a deep, accurate cross-court return with a short, compact swing.

Keep a regular interval of about 4 seconds between each ball to maintain a smooth, realistic rhythm.

This drill helps you turn an opponent’s second serve into an attacking opportunity. It improves return quality, serve reading, and your ability to dictate the rally from the very first strikes.

Quick tip: Keep your swing short and your racquet face stable to maintain control while moving into the ball.
