What Tournament Formats Do Other Countries Use? (Compared to France’s TMC & Open Draws)

In France, we’re used to seeing two main formats in competitive tennis:
👉 TMC (Tournoi Multi-Chances) – where every player gets several matches
👉 Open / Knockout Draw – classic single-elimination

But it got me wondering… what formats are common in other countries?
Do players in Spain, the US, the UK, Germany or Australia experience something totally different?
Are there local systems, ranking methods or match guarantees unique to those countries?

A few examples I’ve heard about (but I’d love your input!):

  • 🇺🇸 Compass draws and round-robin qualifying are popular in USTA junior events.

  • 🇩🇪 Many German clubs run Groups + elimination formats during their summer “Medenspiele.”

  • 🇬🇧 Some LTA tournaments offer box leagues before knockout stages.

  • 🇪🇸 Spain often uses progressive elimination with consolation draws to guarantee matches.

But I’m sure there’s much more out there!

💬 What about where you live or where you’ve played?

  • What tournament formats are most common?

  • Do players usually get several guaranteed matches or straight elimination?

  • Which system do you prefer — and why?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences from around the tennis world! 🌍🎾
Let’s compare and learn from each other!

Spain is all about volume. Most tournaments guarantee two matches minimum, and some academies even run mini round-robins every weekend.

The idea is simple: more match play = more development.

The consolation draw is super common and honestly very useful.
