Young players breaking through later than before

Hi friends,

Look at the top of the game today. While we still see phenomenal teenagers, the path to the elite top 10 seems to be taking longer. Players are establishing themselves and hitting their peak in their mid-to-late twenties more consistently than in the past. Names like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Iga Świątek are exceptions that highlight a broader trend; breakthrough success is coming later for many.

What's driving this? Has the peak age in professional tennis genuinely shifted older?

It's not just hitting the ball hard. The game is a physical puzzle. You need explosive power for serves and groundstrokes, but also insane endurance for five-set matches and recovery. You need the flexibility to slide on all surfaces. Building this complete athletic profile simply takes more time. The 19-year-old phenom who can do all this is a freak of nature, not the norm :-)
