The 2,500-point gap: can Świątek catch Sabalenka in 2026?

Hello friends,

The WTA rivalry at the top feels clearly defined heading into 2026. Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek have traded the world number one spot before, but this time Sabalenka starts the season with a solid cushion.

She holds roughly a 2,500-point lead, which gives her breathing room, but not immunity. Their chase feels almost symbolic: Świątek is hunting the ranking, while Sabalenka is chasing greater consistency when trophies are on the line.

Sabalenka’s 2025 season was built on power and presence. She reached semifinals regularly and proved she belongs deep in the biggest events. However, her conversion rate in finals remains a talking point, with several titles slipping away at the final hurdle.

Świątek’s reputation is different. When she reaches a final, especially at majors, she rarely lets go. Her calm decision-making and emotional control in big moments continue to separate her from the rest of the field.

The Australian Open will be important, but it may not reshuffle the rankings immediately. Both players defend heavy points, so a major swing would likely require an early exit from one of them.

What does Sabalenka need most to improve her finals record?

Is Świątek’s mental strength still her biggest weapon, even with a large points gap to close?

Curious to read your takes and predictions for 2026.
