Rankings vs big wins: are we rewarding consistency more than greatness?

Hello friends,

Lately, tennis rankings spark a real debate. A player can win a huge title and barely move up.
Meanwhile, another player climbs steadily with solid results, without winning a major trophy.

This raises an interesting question about what rankings truly represent today.

  • Should rankings measure peak level, or the ability to perform well every single week?
  • Does the current system punish players who peak for big events and manage their schedule?
  • Has consistency made rankings more stable, but less exciting after major tournaments?
  • Should Grand Slams count even more to reflect their true importance?

Curious to hear how players and fans see this balance between greatness and reliability.

The system favors consistency by design. A 52-week ranking filters out short hot streaks and rewards long-term reliability.
