Is mental toughness becoming as important as the forehand?

Hello!

Watching the new generation lately, I keep noticing how composed they look, even at 19 or 20. Clear routines, very little visible panic after mistakes, and a calm presence on big points that used to take years to develop.

When you look at players like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff, or even Holger Rune, they already behave like seasoned pros under pressure.

It feels like something has shifted in how players are developed.

Is mental training now as important as technique and fitness from a very young age?

Did growing up watching Djokovic, Nadal and Federer set a new mental standard? Or does early exposure to pressure, rankings, contracts and social media simply force players to mature faster?

Do you think young players are genuinely mentally stronger, or just better trained to look calm?

from my experience with juniors, mental work is absolutely structured now. we don't wait for players to learn the hard way. Emotional regulation, between-point routines, and focus drills are part of weekly training, just like serve practice. it’s trained, not left to chance.

My mantra: Never give up a game at 40-0.🎾
