Hi!
Today we’re going to look at a volley drill focused on finishing points at the net, to improve your relaxation on the shot and your ability to take the initiative.
The goal is to teach the isolated player to finish cleanly at the net, despite the pressure of three consecutive returns.
How to run the drill:
You play 3 against 1 with a rotating line: three defenders stand about one metre apart, one behind the other, on the baseline. In front of them, the isolated player positions themself at the net.
A ball machine is set to send a slightly soft, looping ball every 4 to 5 seconds toward the first defender.
- The machine sends a ball to B (the defender at the front of the line).
- B sends the ball back to the player at the net (A).
- Player A must hit a precise volley into the opposite half of the court.
After each successful return, the front defender moves to the back of the line. The next player steps up as the new defender, and the line rotates with every shot.
When the isolated player (A) successfully hits ten volleys in a row without an error, you switch roles: player A joins the line of defenders, B takes their place at the net, and the drill continues until each player has been at the net at least once.
