Hi friends!
Today we’re working on two technical shots that can really change the outcome of a rally: the short drop shot and the defensive lob. This drill uses the ball machine to chain these two actions together at a realistic game rhythm.
The goal of this group exercise is to develop precision on the cross-court drop shot and quality on the topspin lob, while learning to switch quickly from an attacking to a defensive situation.
Drill execution:
For this drill, a ball machine is placed in the center behind the baseline.
Player A starts in an attacking position at the back of the court, while players B, C and D stand beside the machine, lined up and ready to defend.
- The machine first sends a short ball into the service box.
- A moves quickly forward and executes a cross-court drop shot with a slightly open racquet face and a short motion. The goal is to keep the bounce low to force the defender to accelerate their run.
- Player B, on defense, sprints forward immediately to retrieve the ball.
- As soon as B plays the reply, the machine sends a second ball toward A. A must then hit a topspin lob over B.
After 3 drop-shot–lob sequences, A joins the defenders’ line and B becomes the attacker. Player C steps in as the active defender. The rotation continues so every player cycles through both roles.

Tip: On the lob, strike just as your opponent shifts their weight forward—this maximizes your chances of success.
