Have you noticed when you watch a Pro match on TV, all the players really take their time between each point, and at each break?
It's no coincidence, the players manage their time, they make the most of the time they have to recover physically but also to prepare mentally.
There is a time for managing the emotion at the end of the point, a time for relaxation, a time for recovery, a time for concentration, a time for the preparation ritual... Each player has his own protocol time management, there is real work done on this....
In this respect, time is a tool in its own right fully exploited by all high-level players.
You don't need to be a high-level player to learn how to use this magical tool that is time:
There are some very simple things that you can already do very easily:
- Take the time to pick up that ball in the middle of class (I wrote a whole article on it here)
- Take the time to serve
- Take time for your second ball: don't rush: concentrate. each point, take a few seconds: (NB: the official rules stipulate that the game must be continuous,
the 20 second rule is only valid for certain major tournaments, however nothing prevents you from still taking 10 to 20 seconds between each point)
-
-
- Assimilates the emotion generated by the previous point
- Take a few steps and recover a little, (for example, go pick up a ball, dry yourself with your towel)
- Refocus
- Prepare to serve or receive (do your little ritual)
-
- Take full advantage of the breaks: depending on the situation in the match, may need to do a "reset", need to analyze the situation, need to relax... for each situation you can put protocols in place (I think that I will write an article dedicated to this) But whatever your needs, you must take advantage of this break time.
And even during an exchange, you have to know how to manage your time...
An example: You are roasted, out of breath because the rally is a real rally, you know that you are going to need to recover... Change your way of playing, do a few balls in a well rounded topspin, give yourself a little time to take a breath and put yourself back...
