Hi everyone!
Here’s a group drill designed to work on the defense/attack sequence, a common situation in matches. The goal is to learn how to handle a deep cross-court ball while on the move, then immediately follow it up with a powerful forehand counterattack.
How to run the drill:
Player A starts in a defensive position, slightly shifted toward the backhand side, and players B, C and D line up behind.
- The ball machine is placed on the opposite side and set to send a first deep cross-court ball to the backhand side.
- Player A must run and defend with a slice or try a high, defensive reply.
- The machine then sends a second fast ball to the forehand side.
- Player A must recover quickly with side steps, adjust their stance and unleash an attacking forehand aimed at an open area (cross-court or down the line).
A then goes to the back of the line and B takes their place. The rotation is continuous so that all players stay involved.

This drill improves movement endurance, defensive solidity, and the ability to turn a difficult situation into a winning attack.
Pro tip: In the defensive phase, extend your shot trajectory to push your opponent back and give yourself time to recover. For a powerful forehand counterattack, use full upper-body rotation and really engage your legs.
