Hi!
Here’s a group tennis drill that will help you work on the defense-to-attack transition in real match situations. Here, you’ll learn how to turn a difficult ball into a smash opportunity.
The goal is to master the sequence between a defensive shot on a high ball and an offensive smash, working on both positioning and timing.
How to run the drill:
The players A, B, C, D line up at the back of the court, and a ball machine is placed on the other side of the net, in the center.
Player A steps onto the court and starts the drill.
- The machine sends a high, deep ball to A.
- Player A plays a defensive lob.
- The machine follows up with a short, high ball.
- Player A moves forward and tries to finish the point with a powerful smash.
After completing the sequence, A goes to the back of the line, B takes their place, and the other players move up one position.
This drill develops the ability to turn a defensive situation into a winning attack with a smash, and improves footwork and timing when moving forward to the net.

Pro tip:
- On the defensive lob, aim deep to the opponent’s backhand side to give yourself time to recover.
- When moving in for the smash, keep your eyes on the ball right up to the moment of impact.
