Hi!
Here’s a key group drill to learn how to counter players who love using drop shots. The ball machine will help you work on reading the play and reacting fast on short balls.
The goal is to develop your ability to read and anticipate drop shots, then immediately counter-attack with either a counter drop shot or a winning passing shot.
How to run the drill:
The machine is set to send very short balls on both the forehand and backhand sides.
Players A, B, C and D line up on the other side of the court.
- The ball machine sends a first ball to the forehand side.
- Player A runs forward to play either a counter drop shot or a passing shot.
- The ball machine immediately sends a second ball to the backhand side.
- Player A recovers and again chooses between a counter drop shot or a backhand passing shot.
Player A then goes to the back of the line and B steps in to play the next sequence. Each player alternates forehand and backhand sides.
This drill develops your offensive instinct on short balls, improves reaction speed, and helps you turn a defensive situation into an attacking opportunity.

Pro tip : On the counter drop shot, shift your body weight forward toward the net to take the ball early!
