340 – Group tennis drill – Work on the cross-court drop shot and speed

Hi!

Here’s a group drill to work on your drop shot and your reactivity in a duel situation.

The drop shot is a subtle stroke that can really make a difference—provided you execute it cleanly and follow up well. This drill allows you to work both the precision of your cross-court drop shot and your immediate reaction on the next ball, in a simple and dynamic group format.

The goal is to work on the quality of the cross-court drop shot, aiming for a bounce just behind the net, as well as your ability to react quickly to an immediate reply, without rushing or making unforced errors.

Drill execution:

The four players line up behind the baseline, while the coach stands on the other side of the net with a basket of balls.

  1. The coach sends a short ball, either to the center or slightly off-center.
  2. Player A moves forward and plays a short cross-court drop shot that must bounce just behind the net in the opposite service box.
  3. Immediately after the drop shot, the coach sends another ball into an open area of the court.
  4. Player A must react instantly, read the trajectory of this second ball, and return it cleanly without making an error.

Once the sequence is over, player A returns to the end of the line, player B steps in, and the drill continues with all players.
