380 Solo Tennis Drill – Federer vs Nadal with a Ball Machine

Hi!

Here’s a solo tennis drill inspired by Roger Federer’s smooth and precise game, reproducing the typical point construction from the video below.

How to run the drill:

Place the ball machine in front of you, centered on the baseline, and program a sequence of four balls:

  • First ball: simulates a powerful serve to the backhand side. Return it, then recover back to the center.
  • Second ball: a cross-court ball to the forehand side. Hit a deep cross-court forehand with a topspin trajectory.
  • Third ball: again to the forehand side, but this time hit a short, powerful cross-court forehand to pull your opponent off the court.
  • Fourth ball: a cross-court ball to the backhand side, which you return with a powerful, smooth cross-court backhand, aiming for depth.

Do 5 complete sets with 30 seconds of rest between each set.

Pro tip: On each backhand, slightly bring your left shoulder forward and keep your arm relaxed but firm to really feel the smoothness of the stroke.
