373 Solo Tennis Drill – Cross-Court Passing Shot and Lateral Run with Ball Machine

Hi everyone!

Here’s a solo drill to work on the cross-court passing shot while running laterally – an essential skill against an opponent who comes to the net. This training will help you combine movement speed, stability, and precision in your shot execution.

How to run the drill:

Place the ball machine on the opposite diagonal from your stronger side and set it to send fast, deep balls that stretch you wide, with an interval of 4 to 5 seconds between each ball.

Position yourself slightly towards the center of the court, or even a bit on the backhand side, ready to react. On each ball, make an explosive lateral move before contact and hit a firm cross-court passing shot, low over the net, aiming either deep down the line or short cross-court.

After each shot, quickly recover back toward the center of the court with side steps, then immediately prepare for the next ball.

Do sets of 10 balls, then take 10 seconds of rest to maintain quality execution.

This drill improves your coordination, accuracy, and execution speed on passing shots. It helps you counter net approaches more effectively and turn a defensive situation into a winning shot.

Pro tip : On cross-court passing shots, aim for the alley opposite to your opponent’s movement to create an angle that’s very hard to reach.
