Switched to a softer poly - same tension, totally different feel

Hello 😊,

I recently switched from a fairly stiff poly to a softer one, kept the exact same tension… and wow, the difference surprised me more than expected.

Comfort is clearly better, especially on longer sessions, but I feel like I’ve lost a bit of control. The ball sits on the strings longer, my timing feels more exposed, and when I’m late, the shot really shows it.

I thought same tension would mean similar response, but it definitely doesn’t. Now I’m wondering if this kind of string change also requires a small tactical or technical adjustment.

Did anyone here change their approach after switching to a softer poly? Higher net clearance, more spin, different swing tempo?

Yes, that’s normal. Softer polys reward clean contact, but they punish hesitation more. You can’t guide the ball anymore.

A lot of players actually adjust seasonally. Softer strings when it’s cold or when the arm needs a break, stiffer setups when they want more direct control.
