Tennis ball care: Does leaving them in your car ruin them?

Hi friends,

We've all done it. After a match, you toss the ball can or your bag of used balls in the car. They sit there for days, baking in the sun or freezing in the cold. Convenient, but does it actually damage them?

I've heard that heat makes balls go flat faster, but how dramatic is the effect? Is it a myth or a serious performance killer?

It's all about the physics of the rubber. It's a semi-permeable material. Heat increases the kinetic energy of the air molecules inside, making them escape through the microscopic pores in the rubber wall much faster. Once that pressure is gone, you can't get it back. A pressurizer helps, but it can't fully reverse the damage from a car bake-out.
