Hello everyone,
A major surprise unfolded at the Qatar Open in Doha as 20-year-old Jakub Mensik defeated world No. 2 Jannik Sinner in three sets, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3, to reach the semifinals.
Mensik delivered an outstanding serving performance, firing 11 aces and winning an impressive 81.7% of points behind his first serve. He also showed strong composure under pressure, saving five of seven break points against one of the most consistent players on tour.
This victory marks one of the biggest wins of Mensik’s young career and continues his impressive record against top-ranked opponents. He now holds multiple wins over Top 5 players, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level despite his age.
For Sinner, this defeat highlights how dangerous emerging players can be, especially when they play aggressively and without hesitation. Despite controlling parts of the match, he was unable to maintain pressure on Mensik’s serve in the decisive set.
The semifinal lineup now promises exciting battles, with Mensik facing Arthur Fils, while Carlos Alcaraz takes on Andrey Rublev.
Do you think Mensik is ready to become a consistent threat at Masters and Grand Slam level?
