This is an intense and strategic group game designed to turn every return of serve into a genuine offensive weapon. Players learn to dictate the rally from the very first shot.

The objective of this drill is to teach players to treat every return as an attacking opportunity and systematically try to take the initiative within their first three shots.

On-Court Setup:

Play a singles match. The other players wait behind the baseline, ready to enter. Players rotate continuously to maintain a high tempo.

How to Run the Drill:

Each point begins with a regular serve. The returner has a maximum of three shots to gain the upper hand and dictate the rally.

Two possible situations:

  1. If the returner is still in a defensive position after the third shot, the server automatically receives a bonus point.
  2. Conversely, if the returner clearly takes the initiative within the first three shots, the returner receives a bonus point regardless of the final outcome of the point.

The point then continues normally until it ends.

Scoring system:

  • Down-the-line return winner to the server’s backhand: +5 points
  • Crosscourt return winner: +3 points
  • Win the point within the first three shots: +2 points
  • Win the point after more than 3 shots: 1 point

Rotation:

The winner stays on the court. The loser leaves and gives up the spot to the next player. After two consecutive wins, the winner rotates out to ensure equal playing time for everyone.

The player with the most points at the end of the session wins the game.

This drill develops aggressive returning, improves decision-making, and strengthens the ability to seize every attacking opportunity from the start of the rally. The bonus-point pressure encourages maximum concentration and a clear intention on every shot.
